Our California

Poems from Marin County

California is my home and it’s all I’ve known

By Samara Reynolds (6th Grade)

I am the bear running through the mountain stream
I am the bear skiing down the mountain slopes
I am the bear rummaging through your stuff while your sleeping
California is my home and it's all I’ve known
From the crash from the waves and the flicker in the fire
I roam these streets with my head held high
California is my home and it's all I’ve known
From the roar in the wind when you try to fall asleep
From the splash in the puddle
California is my home and it's all I’ve known
To the sky tall redwoods with birds flying high
When you sit on your porch listening to the rain one drip at a time
California is my home and it's all I’ve known
When you sit around a campfire under the glistening stars in there midnight sky
California is my home and it's all I’ve known

The rolling hills of sunlight
cradle blooming valleys, punctuated
with a worn fence or lone doe.
Flaxen grass sways with each rumble
of the train, held in the embrace
of a low-hanging sun and curving
land– here, where everything is golden
